Asymmetric Design Works is a Vancouver-based design office offering Landscape Architectural services to architects, developers, engineers, artists, communities and public sector clients. We specialize in a broad range of services including site planning, urban design, park planning, community relations, planting, green roof and sustainable design.
We are passionate about design and its role in our lives. Consciously or subconsciously - a well conceived environment just feels right. As an extension of this belief, we promote a design philosophy that we like to call "asymmetric symmetry" - the idea that while symmetry in design is a literal representation of balance, balance or symmetry can also be manifested in asymmetry. We relate this to the dual Chinese concepts of yin and yang - descriptions of complementary opposites. Whether asymmetric or symmetric, elements, and the arrangement of elements in space, must form a satisfying and harmonious whole. Then is it balanced - it feels right.
The unique cultural and ecological features of the Pacific Northwest region provide us with a rich source of design inspiration. We look for ways to interpret and celebrate these features in our work. Using familiar forms and durable materials, we create spaces that are meaningful, comfortable and appropriate for use by the group for whom the landscape is intended. Our design simplicity and clarity translates to landscape statements that are both contemporary and timeless. We believe that good design balances aesthetic, environmental, recreational and cultural objectives.
