Hyack Square
New Westminster, BC

Situated between the former Interurban Railway Station and a former Pacific Railway station, the square serves as the main pedestrian gateway between the City’s main street and riverfront. Paving includes red clay brick reclaimed from City streets. A multi-purpose performance stage occupies the centre of the square and utilizes reclaimed wood timbers. The revitalized square will serve as a gathering place for civic functions and as the focal point for the City’s 150th birthday celebrations in May of 2009. Seat walls and seat steps are configured to serve as spectator seating. Lush planting offers seasonal interest and relief from the urban environment. Children will be delighted by an intermittent splash pad/water feature. A broad open stair leading to the public market and dramatic lighting will animate the square and help to reduce the impact of crime that has plagued the square in recent years.
